Position Title: Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) Driver

In the United States, we help newly arrived refugees in the San Diego area adjust to American life and culture. In Uganda, we provide educational scholarships to children with limited opportunities.

Position Summary

• This position is part-time or full-time, up to 40 hour/week position.
• The driver will drive a company vehicle to transport passengers to medical appointments within the County of San Diego. The vehicle has a motorized ramp for loading passengers in wheelchairs and those needing transportation by a gurney.
• The driver will be responsible for properly securing passengers in wheelchairs and/or gurneys to the vehicle latches and assisting passengers with entering and exiting the vehicle.


Each driver shall:
• Be at least 21 years of age
• Possess a current American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certification or equivalent (and maintain certification throughout employment)
• Possess a current CPR certification
• Possess a valid California Driver’s License, designated Class III/ C or higher
• Submit proof of DMV driving record.
• Possess a valid car insurance and registration
• Pass a Livescan background check and drug screening (per SD County Sheriff's Licensing Division)

NOTE: CPR & First Aid must be hands on training, not an online training (per SD County Sheriff's Licensing Division).


Preferred Qualifications:
• Bilingual in any of the following languages: Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, Korean, Vietnamese.
• Cal OSHA trainings: airborne pathogens, heat illness prevention, injury & illness prevention for potentially hazardous jobs.
• Experience working with physically and/or mentally disabled persons
• Experience operating a lift gate, gurney, wheelchair locks, etc.


Description of duties performed:

As a NEMT Driver:
• All drivers shall wear clean uniforms that identify the Alliance for African Assistance and have visible identification of name.
• Each driver shall wear, in a manner clearly visible on their person a driver identification car issued by the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS).
• Maintain a daily trip log which shall be available for inspection upon request by any peace officer or MTS inspector. The trip log will have the driver's name and the medallion number on the vehicle. In addition, the trip log shall identify the scheduling parties by name, date, and time of the prearranged hire.
• The driver is responsible with assisting with vehicle inspection processes including, but not limited to, inspecting vehicle fire extinguisher, checking the fire extinguisher and oxygen tank are secured, taking the vehicle for car washes, reporting any possible things needing fixing or that can potentially be hazardous or be dangerous to the driver and/or passengers.
• Comply with the requirements of the ADA and ADA regulations
• The driver must be professional, courteous, dependable, and punctual at all times.
