At 4pm on Friday, October 21 you are invited to join the Alliance for African Assistance in their co-presentation of a free screening of Where Are You Taking Me?, a documentary by Kimi Takesu that captures the vibrant life and culture of everyday Ugandans.

The documentary, a film that Variety critic Jay Weissberg proclaims is “Beautifully meditative…an enriching experience,” is being showcased at the San Diego Asian Film Festival. Where Are You Taking Me? was an official selection at the 2010 International Film Festival Rotterdam. The festival commissioned the documentary’s making as a series of creative efforts by both Ugandan and foreign filmmakers, aimed at representing the diverse and layered human stories interwoven on the African continent.

Stylistically Where Are You Taking Me? is a moving montage of visual observations traveling through cityscape and countryside in a way so unexpected the audience does begin to wonder just where the filmmaker intends to take us. Through the camera’s lens, the audience gets a glimpse into the playful expressions of rural school children, a celebration of a high society wedding, and is carried from face to face in the colorful frenetic activity of urban markets and street scenes.

In offering its audience understated insights into an average day’s inhabitants, Where Are You Taking Me? “simultaneously tells the story of no one and everyone, bringing a universal sense of the beauty experienced by humanity simply living life,” comments festival programmer Brandon Coyle.

Where Are You Taking Me? honors the kinds of daily experiences foundational to a sense of home, something that is often lost to refugees, as they become foreigners in camps and host nations. The Alliance for African Assistance is co-presenting the film as a way of celebrating the home that refugees leave behind as well as the new one they create here in San Diego. The Alliance welcomes you to come share in the power of living and remembering that remind us there is much that humanity holds the same.

Where Are You Taking Me? is being screened by the 12th annual San Diego Asian Film Festival located this year at UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas (7510 Hazard Center Drive, San Diego, CA 92108).
