We invite you to join the Alliance for African Assistance and the   Alliance Health Clinic in celebrating international World Refugee Day during our 13th annual World Refugee Day breakfast! The event will be held at La Jolla Presbyterian Church on June 20th from 8:30-11:30 am. This year’s World Refugee Day celebration will include refugee success stories, a volunteer and community awards ceremony, cultural performances, silent auction, and special key note speakers. Come learn about the refugee struggle in San Diego (home to over 100,000 refugees), meet refugees, and hear about the exciting work of the Alliance for African Assistance and the Alliance Health Clinic.

Alliance for African Assistance President and CEO Walter Lam, himself a refugee who fled civil war and ethnic persecution in Uganda, started the Alliance for African Assistance in 1989. In the past 25 years, the organization has resettled over 7,500 refugees from more than 30 different ethnic backgrounds. Realizing the great need for affordable medical care, the Alliance Health Clinic opened its doors in 2007, providing on-site comprehensive medical care to refugees regardless of a client’s ability to pay. Walter Lam explains why he is passionate about serving the refugee community in San Diego,

“I remember when I came to San Diego as a refugee. It opened my eyes to what it takes to be successful in America. I wanted to give refugees like myself greater assistance in integrating into life here.”

Proceeds from this year’s World Refugee Day celebration will support the Alliance for African Assistance Child Sponsorship Program through which partnering donors offer scholarships to educate Uganda’s most vulnerable children. The Alliance for African Assistance Child Sponsorship Program partners with donors and the communities from which many refugees have originated to improve the lives of children and their families. Walter Lam discusses the importance of education in transforming the lives of Ugandan children,

“Many kids have lost one or both of their parents and without greater family support, it’s difficult for children to escape poverty. Child sponsorship gives orphans and severely impoverished children a chance to go to school and build a better life for themselves.”

With over 250 guests expected to attend this year’s World Refugee Day celebration, call today before tickets sell out! We also offer community partnership opportunities for businesses and individuals including: table sponsorship, in-kind donations to our silent auction, and the sponsorship of a refugee to attend the event.
